Essential vs. Advanced Panels: Which Do You Need?

The short answer

If you're establishing a baseline and want to check the fundamentals, an essential panel is the right starting point. If you have specific concerns — energy, hormones, recovery, or deeper metabolic questions — an advanced panel adds the markers that dig into the 'why' behind how you feel.

Essential Wellness Panel

The essential panel covers the core markers most adults should check annually. It's the right choice if you feel mostly fine and want a baseline you can measure against later.

Blood sugar
HbA1c — a longer-term view of blood sugar.
Cardiovascular
ApoA, ApoB, total cholesterol, HDL, calculated LDL, triglycerides, Lp(a), and hs-CRP.
Kidney and liver
BUN, creatinine, eGFR, ALT, and AST.
Stress and thyroid
Cortisol and TSH.
Male-specific
Testosterone and PSA.
Female-specific
Vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

Advanced Wellness Panel

The Advanced panel is a separate comprehensive marker set for deeper metabolic, cardiovascular, liver, kidney, iron, nutrient, and hormone context. Its male and female versions differ, so it should not be described simply as Essential plus extras.

Metabolic
HbA1c, glucose, insulin, and estimated average glucose.
Cardiovascular
Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, triglycerides, ApoA, ApoB, ApoB/ApoA ratio, Lp(a), hs-CRP, and homocysteine.
Liver and kidney
AST, ALT, total bilirubin, albumin, GGT, BUN, creatinine, and cystatin C. The female panel also includes eGFR.
Iron and nutrients
Iron, UIBC, TIBC, ferritin, transferrin saturation, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
Shared hormone markers
Sensitive estradiol, cortisol, FSH, prolactin, and SHBG.
Sex-specific
Male adds PSA, testosterone, free testosterone, and free androgen index. Female adds free T4.
Additional measurements
Hematocrit and amylase.

Who is the Essential panel for?

The essential panel is for you if: you feel mostly fine and want a starting point, you haven't had bloodwork in over a year, you're curious about your baseline, or you want to track the fundamentals annually without spending more than necessary.

Who is the Advanced panel for?

The advanced panel is for you if: you have persistent fatigue or low energy, you're tracking fitness or training recovery, you suspect a hormone or thyroid issue, you want to understand a specific symptom the essential panel doesn't cover, or you want the deepest single-check view available.

Price comparison

Essential panels typically cost $100–$150. Advanced panels run $200–$300. The advanced panel isn't 'better' — it's more detailed. If the essential panel answers your questions, there's no reason to spend more. The assessment recommends the panel that fits your situation, not the most expensive one.

Can I start with Essential and upgrade later?

Yes. Many people start with the essential panel to establish a baseline, then add an advanced panel later if something is borderline or they develop new questions. Your results include a retest recommendation that tells you when to check again and whether to go deeper.

Common questions

Is the Advanced panel better than the Essential?

Not necessarily. The advanced panel includes more markers, which is valuable if you have specific questions. If the essential panel covers what you need, there's no reason to upgrade. The assessment helps you choose.

Can I take both panels?

You can, but it's rarely necessary in the same round. Most people start with the panel that matches their situation, then upgrade on the next cycle if they want to go deeper.
